Limon is the main port city on the Atlantic Coast. Bananas and many exports are sent from here. The population is a mainly Jamaican, descendents of those brought to work on the railroad. Consequently, English plus a local dialect are spoken in addition to Spanish. Nearby are beautiful Caribbean beaches, and the area boasts of the only coral reef in the country.
Barra del Colorado Beach is located inside the Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge, Limón.
This straight line and open beach with dark sands and strong swell stretches out for 5 km between the mouths of the Colorado River and the Samay Lagoon. Little coastal and vegetation, abundant driftwood, makes it inadequate for bathing. Main activities are walks and watching (contemplate or gaze).
Barra del Colorado is fishing heaven. Tarpon is the main adversary here, and many say this is the best place in the world for this activity. There are other species here that will also make your day. Like Tortuguero you can only reach Barra del Colorado by boat or plane. There are some very luxurious fishing lodges (one even has its own airstrip)
Tortugero Beach is located 80 km north of Limón city inside Tortuguero National Park.
Straight line beach 5 km long, with dark sands and strong swell. Its main attraction is the arrival of turtles to nest and lay their eggs along the coast. Prominent among them are the green and leatherback (baula) species.
This beautiful and exotic area lies North of Limon. You can only get here by boat or plane. The whole area is comprised of natural canals that lie behind a thin strip of land and the ocean. Turtles, caimans, garfish, and manatees are common sights here. There are incredible jungle lodges and canal tours for you to enjoy.
Bonita Beach is located next to Limón city.
A point/reef break known for its very thick, powerful and dangerous left. Located 5 km north of Limón (downtown). Yellowish sand beach with strong swell, very suitable for surfing. Strong underlows, and coral reefs in the bathing area call for precautions and great care.
Cahuita Beach is located 49 km on the road from Limón city to Bribrí.
3 km long, with light-colored sand, this beach divides into three sections: one appropriate for bathing, another with driftwood and algae, and the third idea] for bathing and diving a national park is located here which protects the coral reef and marine life.
Manzanillo Beach is located the road communicating to Puerto Viejo and other beaches in the area ends in Manzanillo; A very fast beach break located 20 km from Puerto Viejo
Beach approximately 4 km long, between Punta Uva (Grape Point) to the north and Punta Manzanillo (Point) to the south. It has very appropriate spots for bathing and idea] places for diving among corals. Abundant vegetation prevails throughout.
An island off the coast of Limón. In Isla Uvita you will find a good left. Isla Uvita is about a 20 minutes boat ride from Limón with passage available at certain times of the year.
